Hemp Seed Oil VS CBD oil:
What’s the difference?
We love all things hemp. Hemp seed oil, hemp soap, hemp lotion, hemp clothes and list goes on. But when it comes to hemp supplements, tinctures, food items and topicals, it can be a little confusing. Are you finding what you’re looking for?
Often labels can make it difficult, especially if you don’t know what the terms mean. But no need to worry, we’re going to help you determine the differences so you can shop with confidence and find the products right for you.
Cannabis Sativa Seed oil or Hemp seed oil is a ingredient you’ll often see. This is a great nutritional supplement that is plentiful in vitamins. It’s rich in omega 3 fatty acids and phytosterols, which it known to help reduce cholesterol within the body.
+Fun fact, hemp seeds are a great source of protein and is one of few plants that are considered a complete protein.
It also makes a wonderful ingredient for skin care and beauty products as it’s a exceptional moisturizer that won’t clog up your pores. Hemp Seed oil also has GLA (Gamma Linolenic Acid) which is found in omega 6. This has been studied as a natural anti inflammatory.
Hemp seed oil is made from the seeds of the cannabis sativa plant, similar to other seed oils. (like sunflower seed oil, grape seed oil and pumpkin seed oil.) Seed oils are produced by pressing the oils and fats out of the seeds rather than the fruits or other parts of the plant.
Why does this matter in regards to the difference between Hemp seed oil and
CBD oil/phytocannabinoid rich oils? Hang on, we’re getting there.
Hemp seeds do not contain suitable amounts of phytocannabinoids. Reason being, these natural compounds are found most abundantly within the trichomes of the plant. Trichomes only begin to produce once the the plant begins to flower. The purpose of trichomes is to protect the plant from various animals, insects, some types of fungus and even UV rays.
Within these sticky crystals are a wide variety of compounds, like phytocannabinoids (CBD, CBG, THC, etc.) and non-cannabinoid compounds such as *terpenoids. (*That’s a whole other blog.)
Being that these compounds are mostly concentrated within the trichomes of a grown plant, the seeds would not be able to provide useful amounts of these compounds.
Phytocannabinoids, like CBD are gaining a lot of attention and popularity. CBD is known for its analgesic and anxiolytic properties that anecdotal evidence has shown. But now it’s not just people’s opinions on how CBD has helped them or their pets. While more studies are definitely needed, once’s that have been done are starting to back up what many people currently already believe.
So when shopping for hemp products in Canada, whether it be Hemp Seed Oil, CBD Oil or any other variety, you’ll know the difference between these and be able to make a educated decision.
